Save the Rhino Trust Programme - 2013

After a successful support in Q1 and Q2 2013 of the Chyulu Hills Game Scout and Rhino Programme in Kenya, rhino's energy GmbH decided to support in Q3 and Q4 2013 the Save the Rhino Trust in helping monitor and protect the desert black rhino in the Kunene Region in the northwest of Namibia.

Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) was formed in 1982 to reduce poaching and save the desert black rhino subspecies (Diceros bicornis bicornis) from the brink of extinction. SRT’s founding approach was simple but highly effective: offer poachers a more secure livelihood as wildlife guards.
After three decades of SRT’s pioneering efforts and collaboration with the Namibian government, various NGOs and communities, the black rhino population has quintupled and demand for rhino-based tourism is growing steadily.

Working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Save the Rhino Trust’s dedicated teams of trackers go out on foot / camel / donkey and vehicle patrols to monitor almost 25,000km² of this last truly free-ranging population of black rhinos in the world.

The Kunene Region is now home to the largest concentration of black rhinos on earth to survive on land that has no formal conservation status.
